I'm on my third week of training for the New Bedford Half Marathon and I think that this week I finally feel like I'm reaching the place mentally where I need to be. I was talking with Jill on our run on Saturday about the mental strength that it takes to run. With training plans and miles to run, you need to mentally be prepared for a long stretch of putting one foot in front of the other. I think that is why I get so excited about Kettlebells or cross-training because it is a different mental focus. Not only do my legs need a break but my mind does too!! Here is how this past week shook out!
Monday...3 miles...I did this on the treadmill plus another mile
Tuesday...X-train...Early morning kettlebells and 4 miles down!
Wednesday...6 mile tempo run...I got to 5.3 before raging heart burn sent me packing! I did this as a ladder workout...loved it (minus the burping fire part...sorry for the TMI!)
Thursday...Rest...KBs and the bike...I upped my weights this week and boy oh boy it hurt so good!!
Friday...fun workout...Yeah my "fun" workout ended up being me sitting in Boston traffic (Can I say how much I DO NOT miss this traffic...give me back ups on bridges!) as I put on my professor hat this weekend! I exercised my restraint muscle as I did not want to scream!
Saturday...10 miles...A very windy 7.3 miles with my BRF Jill!! On my way to Boston I knew I was staying with Jill and that she is training for the London Marathon. I also knew that she was just as crazy as me and that I missed running with her BADLY! A run was a must...even in the crazy wind!
Sunday... Rest...Yes I embraced this today (kind of) as I got to snuggle extra with these ladies...
Looks like Em is the only one that can look AT the camera! |
How was your week last week? Do you find the mental part of workouts sometimes more strenuous than the actual physical part?
Running with friends in crazy cold temps always makes it better. Way to go for the week. BTW - love your KB vid!
ReplyDeleteHave been looking at running blogs for some extra motivation, and found yours! Have enjoyed what I've read so far! :) I have struggled to get out Monday - Friday with work and weather; but have tried to make up lost ground on the weekends. This past weekend I managed 13 miles - 8 on Saturday and 5 on Sunday. Better than nothing. Absolutely the mental edge is often worse than the physical. Hope you don't mind if I follow along with your blog! :)
ReplyDeleteYes! The mental is so much more of a struggle than the physical unless of course you're talking about the polar vortex and running outside.
ReplyDeleteMy week started off great but ended with a thud:( I need to kick it up a notch this week since it's the last week of my dietbet:0 Your week looked great! way to make it work even though it's cold outside:)
ReplyDeletei can run in the cold, but when is really when i start to wuss out. I can't believe you only have 1 rest day, rock star!
ReplyDeleteI've been working on that mental part. Lots of long cross-training sessions until I can run long again.
ReplyDeleteOh, I totally agree with the mental piece. It probably has always been my biggest hinderance.
ReplyDeleteI think the mental aspect is the hardest! When it comes to the treadmill, I need a TV or intervals or something to take my mind off of it!
ReplyDeleteWonderful week Nancy! You and Jill are two tough ladies getting out there in the wind and getting your run knocked out. Hope this has been a good week for you too.
ReplyDeleteGreat week of workouts for you! I find that at the beginning of workouts it is usually a mental battle (especially running) but then towards the end it shifts toward a physical battle.
ReplyDeleteDid you get my last comment? It didn't appear...
ReplyDeleteThat's strange...didn't get it!
DeleteCongratulations on making it to week 3.
ReplyDeleteKeep it going.
