Fitness Friday....Knowing When to Listen

I am a person who functions best on the go....I get up early, go to the gym, shower and fly out to work, run from school to school, pick up my daughter, and play until she goes to bed.  Go go go go go!  I at times feel uncomfortable when I have idle time and even more than that feel very uncomfortable when I don't do the things I need to.  This brings me to lately....my body has been asking (very politely at first but now is yelling like a toddler) for more periods of rest.

I'm not sure how you are but I pretty much need to get hit over the head with a hammer to wake up and listen to my body, especially when it comes to doing less!  If it's asking to be pushed harder and do more, I have no problem obliging, but rest....not so much.  We all need rest but even more so when our body is sending out that request!  What results when we fail to listen......
injury
burnout
injury
sickness
Yeah not good things!  So while I feel badly for going to bed early and missing out on extra workouts and fulfilling my social media appointments, I know in the long run my body will thank me and not make me pay with one of the above!  Let's hope it decides to thank me this Sunday as I toe the line here....

Do you listen to your body or do you need to be hit over the head like me?

  1. I try to listen to my body. But I lot of times I dont hear what its trying to tell me and I end up paying for it.

I too will be at the New Bedford Half. Have a great run!!!

  2. I'm thinking there is a gap in the market and since I am SO good at resting I should run courses to teach others how to be more like me ... interested ;-)

  3. I'm like you-- it's hard to slow down! But I always benefit from rest, and especially with your half coming up, rest up! Good luck Sunday!

  4. funny this was your post today- i think i have been fighting listening to my body. i know i am pushing myself to do more than i have ever done running and i am trying to do what is right. i think i will take an ice bath today to see if it helps my tired, aching muscles. i do really worry about injury and over use but i continue to do my “schedule” for fear of failing. not really smart.

  6. I'm struggling with learning how to sit still, I have major anxiety when I'm at home alone doing nothing... I say listen to your body but I have to learn how!

  7. You are spot on with this. And I am the same way--it's a struggle to get myself to slow down in all aspects of life. But we DO have to listen and do what our bodies tell us!

    Good luck on Sunday!!

  8. Good luck Sunday!! I stink at down time, and since I have been out of work, I feel like I have wayyy too much downtime and am becoming sluggish!! I am trying hard this week to get out of it, but I got sick and now I am back on the couch doing nothing!!

  10. I can't say I'm perfect about listening to my body all the time, but I try not to let it get too insistent before I pay attention. Currently "listening" while nursing a late-winter cold....lots of fluid, rest, vitamins, etc.

    Good luck this weekend!!

  11. I pretty much don't listen until I massively oversleep. My body's way of telling me to cool it already. Very important message!
    Go get it this weekend!

  14. If my body is telling me to slow down or rest, I tend to ignore it. I know I need to work on that...

    Have a great race!!

  15. Yup I usually need some sort of a wake up call, I like to push and push until ..WHAM, I do crappy in a race or get an injury. Luckily I have only had minor injuries so far~ I am learning to be better about it though.

  16. I am terrible at listening to my body but that is my goal this year! Good luck on your 1/2 Sunday, I was supposed to run the NYC half but I didn't listen to my body and I ended up with a stress fracture :(

  17. I don't do a very good job listening, because I want to believe all will be fine. I'm running a half on Sunday too and hopefully my body will forgive me. It could be that I'm going to get hit over head...

    Have a great race!

  19. Good luck this weekend! Just take it easy and slow and don't try to push too hard!! You don't want to get hurt! It's better to just have fun with it!

  20. Running and "racing" during my pregnancy was the best thing I did for myself, it taught me that I needed to listen to my body since I was responsible for someone else and more important then that workout or extra commitment.

  24. I usually need to be hot over the head. However, this triathlon training is kicking my tail and I am VERY aware. Looking forward to resting for a few weeks after!
Hope you had a FANTASTIC race!
