Three Things Thursday

Some randomness to make your week complete!  Sit back...grab a coffee...and enjoy!

Coffee Talk...Before having Em I was not a coffee drinker unless you count coffee milk (RI specialty)!  Then after she was born and I was back to work (working 3 jobs and getting my CAGS degree) a fabulous friend and coworker of mine asked me if I wanted her to get me a coffee on her way to work...and the rest was history!  Each time I got pregnant after that I quit coffee cold turkey the day I found out I was pregnant.  The nausea and headache that followed had me making a deal with God if He would just make it go away I would cut down on the coffee after!  Well...yeah that didn't work out so well!
I've noticed lately though that I am consuming far too much and the time between coffee wearing off and the next coffee results in me being VERY tired...thus sparking consumption of the next coffee.  I'm not sure what to do about this.  With two small children, a full-time job outside the home, more than enough weight to drop, and numerous races to train for, I need the energy.  I have been finding lately that if I work out in the morning then come 4pm I could go to bed, but if I reverse it I am dragging come workout time.  Any suggestions?  Have any of you tried to cut down on your consumption of caffeine and DIDN'T find themselves dragging?

Didn't your mother teach you...If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all!  Well the other day at a conference I was attending, a person there proceeded to pat my stomach and ask me when I was due......crickets!  Once I got my composure I politely said, "Oh I have a 7 month old!" instead of...
which is really what I wanted to say.  I know that I have a way to go and I'm working hard but boy did this kick me in the shins!

Making it work...As mentioned in my goofy post yesterday, I was away for a conference/committee for work for a few days.  I packed my gym clothes and headed down to the hotel gym ready to get my sweat on before having to sit all day (not something teachers are used to!).  Well let me just say that I think there are bathrooms larger than this gym!  I was determined to make it work though and fortunately there was no one else up at that time so I just too over the whole place!  I actually got a lot of intervals in which was awesome!  That evening I grabbed my Virratas and was able to get in a good run around the hotel complex.  Sometimes you just have to make it work to be LIMITLESS!!!

  1. Boo for Number 2! When I was pregnant with our first little one, an oldish gentleman actually said the following when he saw me and my hubby at the mall: "You're bigger than your husband!" Yeah, and 7 months pregnant. Grrrr. (And ouch ;).)

  2. Number two is why I never never say that to anyone. I let them bring it up, or ask about kids at home first. Great job getting your workout in with a tiny gym!

  3. I admire your composure with the comment--I would have flipped out on the woman! Just keep plugging away like you are--using tiny gyms in hotels and running in odd places--and the weight will come off.

On the coffee issue--I only became a coffee drinker a couple of years ago. I still keep it to only one cup a few days/week b/c I am afraid of the scenario you are talking about. So I'm not a good one to ask about weaning off b/c I've never gotten fully addicted!

  4. Yikes on #2. Why do people ever ask that question? On coffee, I try hard not to drink coffee in the afternoon, but sometimes I get stuck in a vicious cycle. Are you able to take a short walk break instead of a coffee break? 10 min of fresh air might revive you just as much as that coffee.

  5. Rude!!! I never ask anyone if they are pregnant - cause I know how I would feel if someone asked me!!
I have never been a coffee drinker - I like the smell, though!
Way to make your workout happen (even in the tiny gym)!

  7. Coffee - I too am addicted. But during the warmer months, I try to make myself a peppermint iced tea to bring to work and the peppermint really works at waking me up!
Tummy pat - You should have socked that lady....shame on her.
Making it work- good for you! Do what you can, when you can!

  8. Nancy, do you eat a lot of sugar? I read a post from Amber http://girlwiththeredhair.com/2013/01/i-quit-sugar-part-ii/ about it... I tried a few days of cutting back and I definitely had more energy! I have not been able to hold it at all because sugar is my favorite thing ever, but I did feel it working...

  9. I am a fan of coffee too, but I try to drink it only two times a day now. My morning hit, after a glass of water with lime or lemon squeezed into it, and a few sips at night. The rest of the day I drink green tea. It has less caffeine.

I think you can wean yourself gently away from caffeine slowly without experiencing that withdrawal 'headachy flu'.

  10. How rude of that lady! First off why the heck would a stranger touch someone's belly? I have heard stories of this happening, but that never happened to me when I was pregnant. Boundaries people! You look great and I hope that lady melted in shame. Love that ecard. That's what I would have wanted to do;)

  11. When my daughter was 5 months old I made the mistake of asking that question (my heart was in the right place, honest) to a woman who wasn't pregnant. Never, ever, ever again will I make that assumption. I won't even ask that question if it appears the person is going into labor. It is so embarrassing.

  12. I'd have kicked the person.

  13. ugh, rudeness at it's finest! I keep it to one cup a day, because I get waaay to jittery otherwise. Try switching out your other cups of coffee for tea, which has less caffeine. Then try to switch to decaf tea to ease yourself off of it.

  14. You just have to wonder, do people ever think before they speak and do they actually hear what they're saying and think it's ok to say whatever?

Love your make it work determination and attitude!

  15. When I was pregnant the smell of coffee made me sick, I didn't end up drinking it at all and once I gave birth I didn't feel the need to have it. Only in the past 6 months or so have I regularly started drinking a cup in the am and most days I can't finish it. My MO is to workout and have a nalgene while I workout and finish it, then shower, breakfast, then coffee. I do feel a slump around 4ish, sometimes I will use a caffinated nuun tab.

I am always worried that someone is going to say something about my belly. I carry most of my extra weight in my stomach and I know it could look like I am expecting. I wish I could say I would respond like that card, but I think I would just shuffle away :/ some people are ridiculous!

  16. I love coffee! I don't know how to have less, except I have been having half decaf each time in an effort to still "feel" like I am having a cup of coffee, but it's only half as much caffeine. It seems to work for me!
